Posted by Renee Bodie Opening: Brett Perkins with Danish singer/songwriter Nanne-Emelie Andersen Dessert/Appetizer Bar (food contributions appreciated) During the 70s, 80s and early 90s, Rafael performed around southern California in various groups including as a duo with Rosie Flores. As a solo performer and with his band, he opened shows throughout the southwestern U.S. for artists including Crosby Stills and Nash, Sheryl Crow, Laura Nyro, Taj Mahal, Iris Dement, Emmylou Harris and the legendary John Lee Hooker. In 1994, the Joel Rafael Band, in their current form, released their first, eponymous CD. The album won the San Diego CCMA award that year. In 1996, the band released a second CD, Old Wood Barn, which was an 'Americana Hot Pick' in GAVIN. Their third release, Hopper, is the most compelling and evolved offering from the Joel Rafael Band to date. Hopper was released on Inside Recordings, an independent record label that Jackson Browne started in 1999. Their most recent album is a critically acclaimed tribute to the music of Woody Guthrie.

Our latest House Concert with Caroline Aiken and Corinne (opening) was an incredible, blow your socks off experience. This show ranked the highest for numbers of emails received after the show raving about it... both women sang their hearts out... Joel Tepp was simply incredible on guitar, harmonica and clarinet (his harmonica was a show stopper!). Caroline played two long sets, and proceeded to blow everyone away with her awesome guitar (everyone there knew why some consider her one of the finest 12-string guitar players around), and great songwriting, proving again that she is the real thing... the evening didn't wind down until midnight. The comments of so many were summed up by one in an email about the show..... "One of the best, if not the best, (show) so far".
We are excited about our upcoming House Concert featuring Joel Rafael. We first saw Joel perform five years ago, and have been wanting to have him at our series ever since. His haunting ballads send their way deep into your soul... Joels songs tell of his life experience, but they resonate with ours...

Joel Rafael Bio: The 1995 winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival "New Folk Emerging Songwriter" award, Joel Rafael and his band make folk music for the 21st century. Considered to be San Diego's premier acoustic band, they have successfully blended contemporary folk music with heartfelt songwriting and a world beat. With Rafael's daughter, Jamaica, on violin and viola, Carl Johnson on acoustic lead guitar, and Jeff Berkley on ethno-percussion, the band's collective musical energy builds bridges across generations.
