Posted by Pete Curry For "folk banjo," the place to begin is Pete Seeger's classic instruction manual, "How to Play the 5-String Banjo," which is available lots of places including Elderly Instruments (www.elderly.com). Seeger also has an instructional VHS/DVD by the same title, but it is not for beginners. I am currently finishing up a book titled "Folk Banjo," which discusses the playing styles, and includes TABs of songs by, all of the banjo greats of the "folk era" including Pete Seeger, Erik Darling (Tarriers, Weavers, etc.), Dave Guard, John Stewart, Bob Gibson, Peggy Seeger, Hedy West, Dick Weissman, Tommy Makem, Alex Hassilev (Limeliters), etc. This book will be available for sale c/o Elderly Instruments in about a month. (My current book, "Pure DaveAn Analysis of Dave Guard's Banjo Playing," is available from Elderly Instruments, as well.) Another excellent book/CD is "Frailing the 5-String Banjo" by Mueller & Kohler. Hope this helps. Regards, Pete Curry

Hi: The only difference between a long-neck banjo and a "regular banjo" is that it has three extra frets between the nut and the 5-string peg. So, therefore, it is tuned three frets lower. But with the capo on the third fret, it is just like a "regular" banjo. In other words, with the capo on the third fret of a long-neck banjo, you can then use ANY 5-string banjo instruction materials.
