They had a backlog of matches and the weather forecast for the coming week was poor. 3) What a good question. I would guess that there used to be a court twelve but I must confess that I don't know.

1) Up until the early nineteen twenties it was far easier for a Wimbledon champion to retain the title as they were given a bye into the final. The main tournament would take place and the winner would then challenge the existing champion in the Wimbledon final. Because of this, the achievements of Renshaw and Doherty are not regarded so highly.
