you should put the movie on your list too, if only to see the sights like the broadway arcade building and the eastern columbia which feature prominantly. believe also that the seedy side you describe is increased almost only a block away as skid row is next door to 'old LA'. you should look too at what wikipedia says about the place, especially the bit about a lot of those buildings being yuppiefied/gentrified into luxury apartments, perhaps those hotels included. it was an interesting read i thought
