You didn't mention how much assisting experience you had....assuming not many, make a list and start calling the photographer. Don't go through the agencies, they're not useful (at least in my case). I found by persistance "knocking" on door, you may be able to slide in as a 3rd or 4th assistant if the photographer's usual crew isn't available. This takes time...though it various per person. It took my 6 - 12 months to crack in but I have heard of folks getting in pretty easily. You can assist for free but limit it. You may be used as a runner or PA in the beginning but you can work your way up. Even if you're sweeping the floor or taking out the trash, watch how everybody works. Be helpful to everyone from the stylist assistant to production manager. After a while you can see how everything kinda works together and you'll learn to anticipate.....take it from an assistant of 8 years...persistance pays off.
