In very broad strokes, one thought that occurs to me is that when authoritarians grab control of a national government as they have ours--especially if they manage to exert a disproportionate influence on mass media--they have a chance to set a self-perpetuating cycle in motion. If you can make the world seem scary enough, you can increase the ranks of fear-nourished kids who will be more inclined to vote for authoritarians when their time comes ... and so on.
