1999 Ducati Monster S (for "Special") with 4225 easy miles. You don’t sit on or "ride" this motorcycle; you wear it like a second skin as you fly at ground-level. As with every Ducati, you are actively involved in moving this motorcycle down the road, you are not a passive observer. No lay downs (moving or stopped) on this 404 pound (dry) bike, no "track days," no "riding schools,". The bike was perfectly broken in, has been garaged from Day One, and it shows. The elegantly simple two-valve Ducati motor in the Ducati 851-based trellis racing frame is showcased by a body design that is among the most beautiful of any motorcycle ever made. It is a true and perfect expression of the motorcycle as art. No 4-valve maintenance/defect headaches, no liquid cooling, no "sensor" or "computer" issues because there’s no fuel injection, just pure 90-degree air-cooled v-twin 2-valve (desmodromic actuation) carbureted simplicity, the way Ducati intended. 1999 was the last year for the carbureted 900 Monster, before the European Community forced Ducati to change to the difficult-to-diagnose (and expensive to repair) complexities of fuel injection, and was the last year for the "S" to mean something special. The later Monsters were sold with the touring-oriented ST2-based frame which has a longer wheelbase, but provides less responsive handling as a result. If you want the best handling Monster available (and why would you want anything less from a sporting Ducati?), you have to get a pre-2000 model and nice ones are getting hard to find. Even low-mileage stock bikes are not as desirable as this bike because the factory jetting and running setup were less than satisfactory as delivered, thus driving owners either to sell or to attempt their own brand of amateur "fixing" of the problem through the mis-installation of various jet kits which were usually never properly dialed in by a pro. As noted below, this one’s "done," and done right. This bike is a beautiful gloss Ducati black (really, as seen in the photos, a smoke gray) except for the factory carbon fiber pieces which include the front fender and rear hugger, carbon fiber side panels, carbon fiber headlight fairing and clutch cover. The forks are gold, and the gold brake and clutch components (all of which complement the black frame and wheels) are operated by the fully-adjustable brake and clutch levers (found only on the "S" Monster) (pivots lubed at each oil change). If you find yourself wondering why you really like the "look" of this bike, it is likely because you recognize that the black powder coated wheels and the black powder coated trellis frame (only on the "S") just look "right" together, especially with the black paint and carbon fiber pieces. Unlike the regular Monster (71 hp), the "S" came with the up-rated 900 SS motor (sans fuel injection), which has larger valves and more radical cams that combine to provide 74 hp in stock form. As noted, Monsters came too lean from the factory so, to make a great bike even better, the carbs have been re-jetted for better performance, even just off idle. The bike makes tons of torque and great power everywhere through its 6-speed buttery-smooth transmission, which is actuated via the hydraulic clutch. I have added Fast by Ferracci Forza carbon fiber mufflers and upswept pipes giving up to 80 hp, raising the needles a notch or two, and installing larger main jets. I have also added a set of Cycle Cat frame sliders. The "S" also has upgraded suspension from the regular Monster, with full adjustability at both ends, and a full aluminum swing arm with gold chain adjuster covers. The bike is beautiful, fast, it handles like it's on rails, stops on a with the two-piston gold Brembo brakes which are fed by the factory steel braided brake lines, and has no problems. All of the appearance upgrades most people will ever do are already done for you.. The original Michelin Hi-Sports show no wear and still have their nubbins up the sides of the chicken strips. The Monster’s ride height is adjustable to fit many different rider sizes and I’ve currently set this one at its highest adjustment for my 5’11" self (perfect). It is easy to lower the setting for shorter folks, if that is desired. As a result, this bike can be an excellent choice for shorter riders, including women. No service is due until 6,500 miles. The battery is new and has been charged weekly on a Battery Tender (pigtail installed and included). This bike is a lot of fun. This is your chance. If you have been looking for the last carbureted, great handling, best looking and running M900S, act now. They’re not making any more like this one.
The bike is located in Connecticut. I will send pics if you are Seriously interested.
