Posted by Linda Fitzgerald My name is Linda and have slight scoliosis. As a result, my left leg is 1 1/2 centimetres shorter than my right leg and I walk with a little limp (I live in Australia, hence the 'centimetres'). I am 26 and although I don't have any children yet, my mother had evidence of Schermann's disease (not sure if that is the correct spelling) in her back. I think this disease affects the bones somehow. However, this wasn't detected until she was in her 40's (she had me when she was 27). I have an older brother and sister and they have no evidence of scoliosis. My mother also told me that when she was pregnant with me, her doctor told her I was at high risk of being born with spina bifida. Fortunately I wasn't born with spina bifida but I was told by my specialist (who I visited regularly for my scoliosis as a child) that it may be risky for me to get pregnant with scoliosis. By the way, I know a 4 year old boy that has similar problems to your daughter, although a lot more severe. He has epilepsy and takes lots of seizure medication. He has had so many seizures in his short life that it has affected his brain. He has developmental delay and his speech is virtually non-existence. He communicates using Makaton, which is a form of sign language. Neither of his parents had scoliosis or any other problems. Nobody knows why he was born the way he is - it was just something that happened. Hope this helped, Linda
