My daughter wore a Boston brace for a year before her surgery and that it was no big deal, no one seemed to make fun of her and she didn't seem to mind it, although in the summer it was warm since we live in Las Vegas but she never really complained, she wore a lot of overall's which were easier for her to hide the brace if she wanted. She had posterior fusion in Mar 04 and has done great, her curve was almost 55 in the thoracic area and 50 in the lumbar area, we fought off surgery as long as we could but the curve kept progressing even after the bone age xray should her to not be growing anymore.....but all is well
