I'll tell you how the pressure was in the 70's when I wore a brace. I was called hard body, I was picked on. I was starting high school. I would wear my "big Clothes" over my brace and carry a bag with my "small clothes". I would go to the bathroom as soon as I got to school. Take the brace off and put on my small clothes. Hung my brace on the coat hook in my locker until time to go home...then I'd put it back on. Went to my doctor and he knew I had not been wearing it like I was directed. He said if you are not going to wear the brace you are wasting my time and your parents money. I told both of them that I was refusing to wear it anymore...that I may oneday regret it, but I could not take the ridicule anymore and I was certainly never going to get a date with that brace. In 2003, at age 42, my scoliosis had progressed and I had titanium rods put in my back. I would encourage your child to never quit wearing it...there is plenty of time to find a boyfriend/girlfriend.
