Posted by Krista My grandmother has scoliosis extremely bad she is in her 80's and she was never able to have the treatment she needed so now she is hunched over because her spine is so bent. Well my parents watched for me to have scoliosis and when they saw the slight curve they took me to a specialist. We ended up deciding on the surgery. July 1999 i had my first scoliosis surgery. I was 13 and going into my first year of high school. Everything went well they thought at the time. I had no problems untill i was 16 in 2001. In February of 2001 my parents and I noticed a lump on the middle of my spine. It was very painful but every doctor we went to had no idea what would have caused it or why it was there. None of them seemed very concearned but they were all puzzled. Well i was in for a routine checkup with my primary physcian and she finally said of this is very bad u must go to the emergency room now!! after she took one look at the red lump. It turned out to be a absess had formed on my spine and extremely bad infection was all in my back and my bones. Puss like infection. I had numerous surgerys that they cleaned the infection out of my back i was treated with IV antiboitcs for almost 5 months. My doctor's at the time decided against taking my rods out. 6 surgery's and a year later the doctors said that the infection has finally started to go away. well that is what they thought anyways. if anyone has any questions for me please feel free to e-mail me at thekrista229@aol.com or if they just want to talk about scolosis. *krista

hello! I had scoliosis surgery when i was 13 in 1999 now i will be 19 in June. I am still batteling scoliosis. I would like to e-mail you my story and maybe you could feature it on your website because it is not unusual but different then any other you have posted on your site. I will expalin a small part of it.
This whole year i had gone through what was pure hell i was taken out of my junior year of high school and was not sure if i was even able to graduate with my class next year because i was so sick and i kept having to go through so many surgeries.
almost a year had gone by and I felt great everything was good according to my doctors there was slight drainage from one spot on my middle back. but they said it will slowly go away and it did. Then July 2003 I went in for some pain with my back and had x-rays done at the hospital. They told me everything looked good. 2 weeks later i got a call saying the top of my rod in my back was not attached to my spine any more and my spine was curved again. Mind you that after the first scolosis surgery my spine was almost perfectly straight up and down. i thought now i have a curve? what is going on!!?? i was so upset i had been through so many surgeries i thoguth everything was fixed!? my life was going great i graduated from high school, had great friends and a very loving boyfriend and a fun job! Now of course something had to come along and ruin it!
We went and saw a different surgeon in September 2003 and he explained to us that the infection was not gone and that this rod had been loose like this probably for a year now. Just no other doctor had noticed it. He told me that i would have to go back in for surgery to take the rods out so the infection could totally clear up and they could take care of my re-born scolosis. i was devistated. December 11, 2003 i went back in for surgery. The doctors took my rod out and told me the infection was still very bad inside me and was right down in my bones of my spine. We made a plan and he told me this is what it was, december go in take the rods out and clean up most of the infection, treat me with oral antibotics for one year, go back and put the rods back in about 3-4 months. Well i went back in for surgery on March 12, 2004 expecting my rods to be put back in. My doctor said there was too much infection still we would have to wait another 2 months or so. but because i have such a terrible infection on my spine they cannot put the rods in from the back. they have to go in the more invasive way, through the side. I am going in on this coming Monday march 22, 2004 to have antboitic beads removed that he put in on the 13th to treat the bone infection. The doctors think the whole cause of this was a bone fragment was left in during the first surgery and just decayed over the years.
I am unable to work and have no disability to cover my existing bills. My parents, My boyfriend and I have all been struggeling to keep it all together. I have been going through this back surgery hell for 3 years now i just want to get back to my normal life. This will be my 11th back surgery on monday.
