I'm also 17 and I have had only 1 surgery on my upper back and had the rods put in, my upper curve was at 72 degrees before surgery and after it was at only 20!!! They said that I would have to have another surgery in the future for my lower curve because I guess it's progressing. He didn't do it during my first surgery because he said that I'm young and he didn't want to affect my social life and my bending abilities and he said that most of the time it causes lower back atheritis. I would really like to talk to someone that has had the lower curve done and how it affects you. And Becky I know exactly how you feel my ribs are deformed as well too and the scar I have from surgery don't help either. It will be ok tho. 
I would like to talk to any1 else to who has ever had scoliosis or just wants someone to talk too.
