When I had my last surgery all I wished for was a year with no pain (that is pretty much what I got, was just one year with no pain). Also though the better shape you are physically before surgery and after surgery makes a big difference on the amount of problems you will have later down the road. Also when the surgeon tells you that you cannot lift any more than 50lb for the rest of your life listen to what he says. I am sure a big reason for my herniation is because I was lifting way more than 50lbs (I was a jungle gym for kids). Good luck with surgery

I have had a lumbar fusion (well a couple actually). I no longer have movement in the lower part of my spine, which for the most part does not bother me but it has caused a herniated L4 herniated disc. But with any fusion one increases the risk of more spinal problems especially herniated discs.
