hi, Ive just read your 1st post (sorry, lol) don't get on here so much now what with work, etc, but anyway, I was told for 12 years I was mad & even when perforated, I was told it was all in my mind, it was only coz a surgon Id worked closely with for a long time came to see me & saw how ill I looked that he took me to theatre the next morning to see what was going on & he basicly saved my life. it is also thought that my cd was "kicked off" by salmonella, which I had had about 12 years earlier & was seriously ill with for ages.
as for uni cant really help you there as mine was diagnosed after uni, all I can suggest is enjoy yourself, but listen to your body as well & when it tells you it is tired, rest!
where are you in uni? I notice you said your a med student, what year are you in etc, tell me all, lol

I cant believe there is someone with such a similar experience as me! People are very sceptical about my CD because of it being so rare to result from food poisoning!
I'm in my first year, been here a week so far, I'm at Northampton University and I've been very lucky with my flatmates as they are very supportive when I'm ill and what have you, even those who arent even sure what is wrong with me, they dont push it just accept it all and are there for me when I'm poorly. I've had a flare up since I've been here and managed to cope, but it wasnt as severe as it can sometimes be so I'm still sceptical if I will manage to stick it out.
Luckily I have a very good Gastrointerologist now who is helping all he can with the lack of textbook version of CD! At what age did you develop your CD? What was it from eating? I had chicken and noodles so I'm still unsure as to which bit I got the food poisoning from. Have you become very sensitive to alot of foods now? I can hardly eat anything anymore it's a right pain! But luckily my flatmates know not to eat my special stuff!

I got salmonella when I was about 18 from eating cold chicken, everyone else ate it when it was re cooked & was fine, but I was dxd with cd untill I was 30 & they asked if I had ever had severe food poisoning & when they found out about my salmonella my GI thinks that I had it underlying any way & the salmonella started it brewing.
Im doing really well atm, am in remission, so far, had my op in 2004 which is when they discovered my cd & I used to work in ITU & theatre & ended up in both as a patient with my work mates looking after me & it was so embarassing, but was spoilt rotten, lol.
have gone back to work now as am doing so well, but only 15 hours a week & it is more than enough.
are you training to be a doc then? any idea what speciality you want to go in to or is it a bit early to worry about that yet. Ive been a qualified nurse for 6 years now & hubby is a cardiac nurse & bro in law is an a&e charge nurse, so if we can help out at all in the beginning, just shout.
best of luck with uni & enjoy it, oooo main thing is is tell your tutor about your cd, so you have some support in uni, when I did my training, one of my friends at the time had cd & she coped really well & uni were fab with her.

Training to be an OT. I think I want to specialise in children with disabilities and strokes. First week has gone grand. Went out tonight (as you can see its 3:15am atm!) and my flatmates and such noticed I seemed a bit off colour and looked after me and said to let me know when I wanted to go and they'd take me home. I even got a piggy back back so it cant be bad!!
I'm impressed your doctors actually asked you that question. I had to keep repeating myself over and over until someone thankfully listened to me.
Where are you from btw? What areas do you nurse?

cool flat mates Im in Swansea, wales & at the mo Im in Burns dressings & theater in Morriston burns unit, but there is a big shake up going on & as I am on a tempary contract I could be anywhere in the next 3 months, so watch this space.

Head is grand! I havent drank since I've been here which is shocking I know but it can really aggrevate my CD and I dont want to do that especially when I'm away from home. Does alcohol affect yours?
What made you want to be a Nurse? Do you do a variety of different settings and not only burns?

Hya hun, Im fine with alcohol & my cd, lol although since having cd I can only drink a little or I get terrible indigestion, so just drink slowly
I have no idea, my nan always said Id be a nurse & I always said I wouldn't untill I had my daughter & then it all changed & now here I am, lol, no I am just in burns atm, although have done ITU & theater b4 & might have to move elswhere soon, where are you?

I havent drank a single drop of alcohol still since I've been here! Simply because I'm scared of being really unwell away from home. But I suppose it's only doing me good!
However I have already caught a bug that is going around. NOT AMUSED!
Do you catch them really easy aswell?

omg, all the flipping time, to the point where I am now really paranoid when anyone catches anything incase I get it as I always get it 10 times worse & if it is a tummy bug Im in hospital straight away with it.

I cant have much alcohol, nobody believes me that I havent drank a drop of alcohol since I've been here in fear of getting a bad flare up away from home like!!
