I've high output stoma fluid i.e. can be up to 4 litres of watery ouput instead of 1/2 litre of thick output. Its caused by my body producing excessing digestive juices i.e. should be about 1 litre and its about 3 litres. A simple proton pump inhibitor should sort the problem and infact when i take it it cuts output by half! Fab wonderful great EXCEPT i'm alergic to an ingredient in the PPI's. Not just a bit alergic - hugely alergic in that i get raised ALT levels off the scale which can potenitally cause organ failure - so now i'm playing cat and mouse. I've tried 3 types of PPI and ALL have made me really ill have 3 more to try but they make me so poorly i hate taking them. High output isn't just annoying it causes severe dehydration resulting in hospitalization. I've just had another letter to say i'm now low in magnesium AGAIN due to high output and need another infusion. Have to say this seems like a no win situation. If all the ppi's fail i;ll be faced with constant infusions and hospitalisation and i'm not best pleased about it. grrrrr

Bless you, hon....there's just nothing fair about what you've run into with this problem. You can only hope that one of the remaining ppi's will solve the problem but I can imagine the horror that you must feel in having to even try another one since the others have given you such problems! Please know that I'm thinking of you and praying that there will be an improvement for you soon. You soooooo deserve a break from all of this and a return to a "somewhat normal" lifestyle!!

Im afraid this is one thing I cant help with, I have no idea about ppis & interactions & neither me or matt are gonna see any docs now as are off on hols this week, but if by chance I do, will let you know, Im sure there must be an alternative, maybe not as good, but there must be something.

have you tried ranitidine? matt mentioned it might be an alternative? although why exactly are you on ppis?

i don't have stomach ulcers or gerd or anything it's just they measured my output and can tell from that my body produces way too much digestive juice in the pancreas, so ppi'z help apparently. Ranatidine won't really touch the problem as its not strong enough apparently though i can take them as a last resort to help a smidgen. They are still investigating why my body produces too much digestive acid.

Can they isolate what the ingredient that causes the reaction is? I react really badly to some medicine that most are good with, I know how miserable it feels when you know that something should work and you can't have it.
You're always in my kindest thoughts Chip, I hope a solution comes soon.

They gave me omeprazole when the GP was trying to work out what was wrong with me, I never took them, they work in a different place to where I was / am hurting. I lost much faith in GPs.
