Hi there,
I just wanted to give you a bit of an update on Gary.
In June he had a stroke (he's at risk of this due to his heart). It didn't seem to do much damage (he's on warfarin, I'm sure that helped) and he was soon home.
A few days later though he started with a UTI. To cut a very long story short, he's been in and out of hospital since and on the days he's been at home he's been too unwell to do much - even on his "good days".
He has now been diagnosed with bladder stones and we're hoping this is what is causing all the problems, because they are going to remove them.
Two weeks ago he was ill at home over the weekend, and didn't improve. On Monday he was admitted to hospital once again and given antibiotics for the infection. We expected him home the next day. However, over night his condition deteriorated. His temperature went very high (he does this sometimes - we think it's his immune system over reacting) and his blood pressure dropped very low (new problem). So they transferred him to ICU.
He stayed there until last Friday when they moved him to an ordinary ward. He's still there now.
They are happy they have cleared up all the infection - and Gary certainly looks better. He has a date for his pre-op (to remove the stones) and I'm hoping this is all done while he's still well and infection-free.
The cause is uncertain. If they remove the stones and the problem remains then we'll just have to push for more answers. At least they've done camera tests and a kidney scan and nothing Nasty is showing up.
Meanwhile, his mobility is rock bottom. He can walk round his bed with a frame. His mobility has been getting a lot worse but if you're fighting an infection you do feel weak.
They are currently assessing him. We've been pushing and pushing for some advice / help on this for over a year now and he's been passed from one person to another. So I won't hold my breath!
Hopefully he's on the road to feeling a lot better.
I'm resting as much as I can because visiting is exhausting. The journey can take me over 2 hours each way depending on the time of day. But at least I'm managing. When all this started (Dec 2007) I couldn't have done this. I do believe my own condition is improving very very very slowly!
Kathy
