Hi Kevin- Our board isn't what it used to be but I am board manager so I will try to answer your question. I too have crohns and have had two small bowell resections. After my second resection I was referred to a gastroenterologist who wanted to put me on Remicade. Some of our board members are using remicade and have had good results in controlling the disease symptoms. As I understand remicade- it 'supresses' the immune system so that it does not trigger the crohns symptoms. My only problem is diarrhea so it seemed way too drastic for what I was experiencing. For others with a more severe case of crohns it does work and to them it is worth it. Here in Oklahoma USA it was $6000 per treatment and they wanted to do them every 6-8 weeks. My insurance only pays 80% so that left me with a big cost.
Remicade is a n IV solution that they give every 6-8 weeks and takes about 2 hours to administer. It is done at the doctors office and you watch TV or read while this all takes place. Like I said, its good for some and not so for others.
You can research Remicade on the internet or look for "Living With Crohn's" and see what you think.
You can also do online a quiz called the "Crohns Disease Activity Index" (CDAI) or the Harvey-Bradshaw Evaluation to judge where you are with your crohn's disease.
I am a 60 year old male who teaches elementary physical education and am around 230 pounds. Dosage of remicade is based on weight and the cost varies accordingly. If I can offer more information or possibly refer to someone else please feel free to contact me.
Oklahoma Hugs, Love, & Prayers
