Hello. Thank you for having this site! I have long-standing gut problems, and am wondering if they sound like UC to anyone here?
Me: 35 yo female, father has Crohn's, I have a hx of alternating c (for months at a time) & d (also for months at a time), which seem to be seasonal, and bloating with certain foods (wheat, grains, sugar, raw veggies, all cause problems, so eat grain-free & sugar-free w/fiber supplements). I have mucus & sometimes red mucus in stool. I do get pain (mostly under left rib and lower left side - my left), but not that much anymore with the diet.
Had gallbladder removed in 1998, which kicked off 3 months of nonstop D.
I've had all the scopes from both ends, small-bowel follow-through, and scans. I am scheduled for repeat colonoscopy in June - the last one was so painful it woke me up when they got to the top middle part (near the belly button), & I asked them to stop. Silly me! Now I have to do it again. All bx results normal except for hyperplastic polyps. We'll see what is in the rest of the colon, I suppose - they're knocking me completely out for this next one.
I have tested negative for celiac (on a gluten-free diet, though), Crohn's, and all rheumatologic labs normal. IBS is the popular theory, but there is mucus and blood somewhat frequently; sometimes it is the bright red of hemorrhoids, but often it is darker, maroon or rust-colored.
I also have had sacroiliac joint pain for 10 years (it waxes and wanes) and knee and spine issues (serious back stiffness no matter how much yoga and Pilates I do). Again, all arthritis panels are negative, though C-reactive protein was elevated last time. Also, my eyes are almost always red, sometimes around the iris on my right eye.
Any ideas? I'm certainly not eager to have UC, but I am curious if all this adds up to something other than IBS. Is constipation ever a symptom of colitis?
Many thanks in advance!
