Good Morning:
I know some of you will disagree with my decison not to have the Colonoscopy procedure but I would like to explain why:
The berium scan did not show diverticulitus.
The X-Rays did not show diverticulitis
The stool test did not show diverticulitis
The blood test did not show diverticulitis
Pushing on my tummy by multiple examinations by drs. ruled out diverticulitis
And finally, 5 different drs have told me that my symptoms do not match diverticultis, only an irritated bowel. I had been taking an antibiotic, as well as methacarbamol and vicodin which all three can irritate the colon. beyond inflamation I have no other diverticutis aggravations as long as I stay totally on a soluble fiber diet! I sleep every night with no distress.
I also found this on the web about IBS:
The Use of Fiber in the Irritable Bowel
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common disorders of the lower digestive tract. There is no disease present with IBS, but it creates bothersome symptoms such as altered bowel habits -- constipation, diarrhea, or both alternately. There may also be bloating, abdominal pain, cramping, and spasm. An attack of IBS can be triggered by emotional tension and anxiety, poor dietary habits, and certain medications. Increased amounts of fiber in the diet can help relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome by producing soft, bulky stools. This helps to normalize the time it takes for the stool to pass through the colon. Liquids help to soften the stool. Irritable bowel syndrome, if left untreated, may lead to diverticulitis of the colon. A high-fiber diet may increase the bulk in the stool and thereby reduce the pressure within the colon. By so doing, the formation of pockets is reduced or possibly even stopped.
I totally agree with this description/explanation based on all medical facts explained to me by the 5 drs. So I feel there is no need to go thru the Colonoscopy procedure at this time. I will consider it absolutely if in the future my condition worsens.
My understanding tho, is if I stay on the soluble diet faithfully, I can avert diverticultis possibly for many years.
Raymond.
