Many Christians do not realise that spiritual slothfulness is a sin because there is no obvious evil act committed - it is a sin of omission. Also many do not realise the extent of their slothfulness because there is little preaching against it, and because this sin is so common even among spiritual role-models. But the most likely reason for not "recognizing" this sin is our desire to continue in it! Jesus called the slothful man "thou wicked and slothful servant" (MAT 25:26). We are commanded not to be slothful (ROM 12:11, HEB 6:12) but we told to "go to the ant… consider her ways, and be wise" (PRO 6:6) because "he that is slothful… is a great waster" (PRO 18:9). We are exhorted to whole hearted diligence in our spiritual exercises (DEU 11:13, PSA 1:2, 1 TI 4:15, 2TI2:15, ITH 5:19). We are to imitate our Master who "went about doing good" (ACT 10:38), and who said "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work" (JOB 5:17).
