(This is the weekly post where you share your week of food. Did you have anything that really made your week, such as your favorite soup, a lunch out, or maybe you had something new? Find a new food product? A new appliance? Please do share!)
I had quite a week, because we did our big shopping.
I was careful what I got, but still got a couple of treats, such as a grapefruit and some of my olives. I try to get several jars, because they are quite small, and need to last me about 9 weeks, but they haven't had many in stock for the past 2 shopping days, and no matter what I've done, I can't get them ordered. So, I got fewer than desired, but did get some, so I'm better off than I could be.
As everyone seems to have discovered these days, they don't always have everything in stock.
We went to buy chicken (my meat is low, low, low.) but there were only 2 packs. I split them with Ds, 1 pack each, and made chicken pot pie pockets with mine.
He ordered his bread from the co-op, and when he picks it up, might be able to get more chicken.
I got my veges in 2 batches, because we did three stores one day, and 1 store another. That allowed me to break up prepping them for the freezer. I still have fresh ginger to prep and freeze, and some beets for more pickled beets, plus onions.
I was supposed to get apples, but we can't find them.
Mostly I got important needs, as I tried to keep my list smaller than usual, even though it's for 2 months.
I still need to get a couple of things for the kids online that were not in any store. I should have done it already, but couldn't stay online.
One of the meals that I had last weekend (?) were burritos. I have to say, they are always good - I love a good burrito, but these were the best that I've had in years! They were soooo good!
Now, I wish that I'd frozen them, instead of having eaten them, because they would have made a great Thanksgiving dinner! (We may have stuffing w/ chicken on a 'diner night', but we've pretty much decided not to make a Thanksgiving-y dinner on actual Thanksgiving. We have decided to not put the pressure of having to try to make the holiday dinner all at once without the kitchen set up better.)
So, I'm not sure what Thanksgiving or Christmas dinnerz, will be, but with shopping so infrequently, I have to decide ahead of time. I do know what I want to do for Christmas Eve...or maybe Christmas - make homemade tamales. They are time consuming, but can be made ahead and frozen. Christmas Eve is the traditional time for them, so it's perfect! I usually make 2 types, beef and chicken.
Anyway, we did well with the shopping - maybe we're getting it down? Though, now that I've said that, I expect next time to hit one problem after another!
We started in Ukiah at the co-op, then Raley's. Then, Ds came straight here, and dropped off the perishables like the chicken, dairy, his frozen foods, etc. Dh repacked them, and put his in the freezer and 'fridge in bags so that we all got the correct groceries, and he could get his quickly once he headed home.
While that was happening, Ds went back to town and to Safeway. We pretty much stuck to our lists. I told Ds that we were like a well-oiled machine!
Though he had a job in Ukiah before we started, we still started earlier than usual...around 11:30 A.M. So, we were done by 5ish? Which is better than 10 when we shopped in August.
Ds dropped off our Safeway food, and took his home. Done!
I didn't need certain things that I'd already gotten, such as that Kirkland plastic wrap. Ds took one look at it when it came, btw, and said that no one needed that much plastic wrap, lol! I ignored it, as I know that I won't need it for some time to come, and am happy with that.
I actually need it more for gf food making than anything. When you roll out certain homemade, gf doughs, including when you make tortillas, you have to roll them between 2 sheets of plastic wrap - each tortilla separately.
So, whew! That is done! Now to see about some meat...!
The chicken pot pie pockets, btw, came out well. Picture bread empanadas filled with pot pie filling. We are kind of addicted to these things. I want to make them with a patty melt filling next.
How was your food/shopping week?
