I will sometimes see a random food photo, and it will give me an idea. It might be ground lamb with mint, but I go with the *idea* that it gave me, not what it actually is. So, instead of lamb and mint, I might think of sloppy Joe's.
Or, it comes out of thin air...I have no idea where. I enjoy talking about food with Ds. Sometimes I give him ideas when he's been working and doesn't want to think about what to cook. Other times, I will be stumped, and he makes good suggestions.
He's a really good cook, and we cooked together since he was small, so he knows what will appeal to me, and what I can and can't eat.
Then, of course, I enjoy talking to you guys about food. I've gotten many an idea from our conversations! :-)
A funny (odd?) thing happened the other day. I've mentioned that ddil does not cook, and eats differently than I do. (Don't ever ask what all she eats mayo with. I can't un-hear it. lol!) For example, she dislikes several foods that I love, and doesn't understand why you would brown food.
Anyway, Ds was boiling potatoes to make mashed potatoes, and asked if she would test a potato to see if it was done. He was cooking other things.
She didn't realize that they needed testing, I guess. After tasting one for doneness, she said, "Blech!!"
Ds said, "What?"
She proceeded to tell him that they tasted awful. He stopped and tasted one, and said that they didn't taste awful, they tasted like a plain potato.
Apparently, she had never tasted a potato that wasn't completely seasoned, and given to her ready-to-eat.
I have never known someone who hadn't tasted a plain potato before.
Speaking of potatoes, while she eats them mashed, and I think baked, plus French fries, she won't eat them cut up, like home fries, hash browns, Tater Tots, etc.
Enough of that, I just thought that it was interesting.
I had never heard of a HS exemption until you.
I'm trying to get a discounted organic status this year. We only have until the end of Oct. Hoping, hoping.
I usually listen to my body on salt. One of my conditions requires that I take in extra salt. My Dr. reminded me of that recently. Not enough salt might have helped my downward slide during/after evacuation.
I cook with salt mostly, too. I only add at the table for certain dishes. But, because we don't eat hardly any pre-prepared foods from cans, boxes, etc., and because we don't drink town/city water, our overall salt is low. Dh's salt level is on the low side of normal range, and while I have to eat more than he does, so that mine is higher than his, it's still within' normal range when I have tests.
I used to salt my popcorn more than not, too, but gave the dogs unsalted popcorn also.
If eating while watching T.V., I'd sometimes try random flavors, like parmesan.
Recently, Ds bought a bag of cheddar cheese powder. It's not fake, but real. It was a treat for Dh's birthday, but we didn't get to it, as we were evacuated both for Dh's birthday, and our anniversary.
So, he's been experimenting on ddil. At first, she didn't care for it. He and I came up with it needing salt added. So, he took his spice grinder (small, electric coffee grinder.) and put some salt in it to make it super fine. Then, he mixed some with the cheese powder, made ddil popcorn, and shook it in some of the cheese/salt powder. She said that it was delicious, and she eats cheese puffs from the store.
So, while you have to read about different brands, and people's reviews, because they aren't all created equal, cheddar cheese powder...with salt...sounds like a really tasty snack. One of these days, he will make some belated for Dh and bring it over, along with some chocolate-caramel popcorn. 2 types of homemade, flavored popcorn was/is his birthday gift to his dad.
Okay, thank you, I will look. I never went through the mail yesterday, with Frankie here and having fits.
But, on that subject, he was really good last night. When he was living with his former owner, who was living in his car at the end, he would buy burgers, and share them with Frankie. Frankie loves them.
Last night, Ds had to go to Ukiah to get extra parts, since the pipe bending wasn't working, and the ditch lengths had increased.
On the way back, he offered to get Dh In 'n Out burgers. Since Dh had lost another 25 lbs., I thought that it was a good idea.
Poor Frankie, who was with him, got super excited. I felt sorry for him, and said that he could pinch off a piece of one of the patties. Frankie almost wiggled across the truck; he was over the moon!
Then, he came back into town, and said that he had one more stop to make...he had to stop at the gas station to get propane for bending a couple of the pipes, as they don't sell propane after dark, and it nearly was dark.
He called me to tell me something when he got back in the truck, and said, "Oh!"
Apparently, he had left the bag of burgers in the cab of the truck, with Frankie the burger lover, while he went to get the propane!!!
However, Frankie didn't touch it! He was just staring at it. So, we decided to reward his good behavior with another bit of burger patty. Whew! Good dog!!!
Yes, I've thought that, too. It gave me cold chills the first time that I realized that we could have been there.
I assume that they did. I wasn't down there when they went in.
Thank you. :-)
