Posted by Jason Hutto So for the first column I figured I would tell my story of getting into the business and running my own shows. It's pretty long so bare with me. I've watched wrestling since I was about four years old, I'm 26 now. The first time I watched wrestling, NWA mind you, I said to myself that is what I want to do. I want to be a wrestler. I would wrestle my big ass teddy bear, my friends, and anyone who wanted a shot at my M.U.S.C.L.E.(remember those lil pink wrestling "figures") wrestling title. So up until I was 15 thats what I wanted to do. I used to go to all the shows at the Township and hang out in the parking lot before the shows to get a picture with the wrestlers. Which was cool. I met Cactus Jack, Steve Austin, Ricky Steamboat, pretty much anyone who ever wrestled at the Township at the time I met. Except for Ric Flair, I did meet Yoshi Kwan and Bunkhouse Buck though if thats any consolation. I went to my first indy show at the Jamil Shrine Temple. Me and a friend went and of course we hung out in the parking lot before the show. And the first wrestler that showed up? The Iron Sheik. He was pretty nice and asked my friend to carry in his, I want to say battakas. It was the things he used to swing over his head, and then challenged a fan to swing them as many times as himself. As we walked in the back we saw Demolition Ax putting on his facepaint. We hung around for a second in the empty arena. Then like dumbasses we walked out the back, to the entrance, and bought a ticket. We talked to Greg Valentine for about 5 seconds and then he said "Are you going to buy something or what?" maybe he was just staying in character, but he seemed like a prick to me. And being a dickwad isnt going to get me to buy your picture. Wahoo McDaniel was selling merchandise too. I used to watch him all the time at the Township. I remember my granny would go with us sometimes, she would do the indian chant thing and get all riled up. Wahoo was a class act. He talked to us forever, and answered any questions we had, he was real cool, and when I look back I should have bought something. Thanks for taking the time out Wahoo. Once I was 15 I realized you had to train to be a wrestler. So I started checking in to it. I ordered a 15 page book called How To Be A Professional Wrestler. What a waste of 15 bucks. I was told about a show happening in Batesburg. So a friend of mine and I decided to go. There was probably about 10 people in attendance, now note the show was held in a open field, with a barn as the dressing room. Most of the fans were the wrestlers wives/girlfriends/family, and two homosexuals watching the action sitting on a blanket and having a picnic It was OK. I found the guy who ran the show, who I later found out to be Tommi Feathers trained people to wrestle. Even though I wanted to wrestle, I was a little scared. I didnt know what the training entailed, so I figured I would let my friend train, and then have him show me some things. Well when it was time to go, my friends Ma wouldnt let him go. So I was on my own. I wasnt going to train right then, but I still wanted to check it out. I made my way to Batesburg and watched the guys take some bumps. They wanted me to take a scoop slam or back bump. They showed me how to take a back bump, simply throw your legs out from under ya and tuck your chin. I asked what would happen if I didnt tuck my chin. Preston said you'll get a headache. I declined, watched for a while and went home, then I tried some bumps. A thing most people do not know about me is I have Muscular Dystrophy. I've done pretty well at hiding it, and just by looking at me you couldnt tell it, I should be more open about it, and I'm surprising myself by telling all you people now. But when I did these bumps I realized my chin dont tuck. What happens is my head just snaps back, connecting with whatever I am landing on. I've had one concussion, and concussions arent good. At that time I realized physically I cant be a Pro Wrestler. But is there something else in the business I could do? Part two coming soon. The other day I was looking around on the net and found alot of columns by "internet wrestling journalists" you know essentially fans of wrestling who decide to throw their two cents in, which is cool sometimes. So I figured at times I get bored, and I like to write stuff sometimes, that I would put a column up on the CCW site since it isnt really used.
