I only drove my car about 1500 miles on KYBs before I put them away but I liked them. If you bottom them out hard they are going to start leaking in a hurry.
As far as 3 inches longer, just remember what you gain on top, you lose on the bottom. So if standard length shocks work fine, going with a 3 inch longer shock normally means you're cutting down your travel and you will bottom them out faster. If you're lifting and adding 3-4 inches to your travel you will be fine.
This is just a general rule though, look at the expanded length and the collapsed length and see if it matches the specs you're looking for. If you really wanted to get into it, we could start talking pressures vs spring rate vs what you use this thing for.
As far as Ranchos go, I stay away from anything with a monroe name on it or behind it. Those are the shocks I personally have the worst luck with. I'm guessing the Rancho is more in spec with Marks driving style and travel needs over the KYBs, but yours may be different, I know mine are.
Either way, if you want the shock to last, stay within it's travel specs, add a strap to keep it from slamming while retracting if you jump or anything, and make sure it retracts to a spec you feel good with. Like I said travel is just the very basics. I run a KYB Monomax because I run stiffer torsion bars and offroad a little more.
