What's a good year for 3x3 trailing arms??

I found a 1969 bug for cheap and want to build a baja and people keep telling me that I should get a 1972+ bug due to the IRS instead of the swing axle. I definetly want to install rear trailing arms (3x3). Now what would a good year bug be for a 3x3 trailing arm setup? or is the '69 ok?? Can anyone help??
