Oh, I forgot to tell you that road signs in Thailand are mostly accompanied with English transcription. You'll have little difficulty getting around if you have a moderate map. There's no such thing as a really good map in Thailand. You may want to bring along a compass, as the position of the sun often fails to tell you the direction in tropical Thailand. I recently got a cheap one, the kind you put through the wrist-watch band.
