I am a retired medical doctor and a BMW enthusiast from Seattle in USA. I ride a 1992 R100GSPD. I am coming to Thailand to ride for 3 weeks starting about Dec. 3. I would like to meet some Beemer riders while I am there. I will ship my bike to Singapore arriving on the 29th of Nov. Hopefully I will have no problem riding it into Malaysia and then up and into Thailand. I do not have a carnet so I suppose the customs people could stop me at the border and require some money be put on deposit. Do you know a way around that?
I will then drive up the East side of Thailand and all the way up the Laos border cutting over to Chieng Mai and Chieng Rei and Mae Sai. and down the Burma border, thru the road with 1000+ turns. I don't plan to come to Bangkok because I am afraid of the traffic. I have riden a friend's bike in Thailand about 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. At that time, they told me to avoid Bangkok if possible. What do you think?
I appreciate any advice you can give since I will be travelling alone and am not too sure I can read the road signs to get around.
Thankyou, Steve Moore.
