Posted by Illuminati on 6/5/2005, 3:37 pm, in reply to "The Principle of Analogy" One of the great weaknesses in Islam is that there has been little legitimate criticism performed on the Koran and other Muslim holy writings. What has been done is by non-Muslims since Muslims don't have the ability to ask penetrating questions concerning their own religion. Islam went to sleep mentally about 1000 years ago and shows no signs of awakening. If Muslims or Christians believe our religion is given by God, we should not fear deep study or criticism. But we should insist that the criticism is performed logically, the initial assumptions are reported along with the conclusions, and the conclusions are supported by the study and are reported honestly. A religion which can not withstand scrutiny is as worthless as a bridge which has been eaten through by termites. If I were a Muslim I would be greatly concerned about what the religious leaders are trying to hide by shutting down critical research or any other legitimate questions by violence if necessary. What are they trying to hide? Actually plenty. They know just how vulnerable their theories really are.

The only problem I can see in the principle of criticism is that the word "criticism" has a negative connotation in many instances. When it is properly used in a neurtral sense to mean the analyzing, classifying, interpreting, or evaluating of literary works, it is perfectly legitimate. No one has perfect knowledge about God and study and analysis is beneficial to improving our understanding.
