Since God created people He would certainly not be wrong about the relative intellectual capabilities of men and women. On the other hand, Muhammad and his male cohorts could certainly be wrong if they had degraded women to the point that they didn't recognize their natural abilities. The only answer I can think of is that the Koran has been misunderstood or mistranslated. That is difficult unless the hadiths are rejected since they address the very verse in the Koran under discussion. Even if you reject them as authentic statements of Muhammad, the hadiths clearly reflect the interpretation of the Koran in the years soon after Muhammad's death when the people were much closer to classical Arabic than we are today thus making the mistranslation defense difficult. It appears the early Muslims not only translated the verse as my Koran renders it but they also believed the Koranic verse proves women's intelligence is limited. In other words the verse in the Koran doesn't refer to the particular degraded circumstances in which women lived in Islamic society which could make it difficult for them to honestly state the terms of the contract but was instead a general statement of women's inferior intelligence. This is why I'm looking forward to Sarah's answer since I'm completely stumped by this one. How could Islam be a religion with a holy book dictated by God Himself if it contains even one blatent factual error? After she answers this perhaps she will address the verses which address the movement of the sun across the sky each day and how it rests beneath Allah's throne at night. I'm stuck on these passages also.

It will be well worth the wait when Sarah answers the questions I posed 4-30-05. I'm especially in her explanation for the verses I posted on 4-20-05 which seem to state that women's general intelligence is considerably less than that of men and they are incompetent to remember a verbal contract accurately which means their verbal abilities are inferior to men.
