Any yet as we read the gospels we find parables and disputes with the Jewish scholars concerning a few isolated texts but not an intense exegesis of scriptures as we find the risen Jesus treated these two men to. As I thought about this incident I realized we do have Jesus' interpretations of scripture. These are found to some extent in he gospels, in the exegesis found in the writings of his original apostles, in the book of Acts and in the writings of Paul. One of the most important parts of the Jesus tradition is found in the preaching of His disciples after the resurrection and in the scriptural exegesis with which they confronted their opponants. For me, the ultimate understanding of the Hebrew scriptures and of the meaning of Jesus' teachings is found in the gospel of John who had an entire lifetime to reflect on Jesus' teachings and their theological implications. While the synoptic gospels appear to be based on packets of information which Jesus had taught His disciples probably by repeating them multiple times and which they had memorized and passed on to the ministers of the word, John gave the meaning of Jesus teachings in his own unique way. As John stated repeatedly, the basis of all righteousness is to really and truly love God and love other people as ourselves. According to John, this is the summation of all righteousness and has never been improved on since.

I used to read the following passage and wish I had had the opportunity to hear Jesus preach from the scriptures they way these men did.
25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
KJV
31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
KJV
