Posted by Illuminati on 4/25/2005, 8:17 am, in reply to "Re: More Miracles in Islam" I don't know how Muslims can put a stop to wife beating or even discourage it under the circumstances. However so long as Muslims maintain the Koran is God's very words and the hadiths are more accurate than the bible you are stuck with what is found in those sources. I'm sure you are acquainted with this passage. The word "(lightly)" was added to try to soften the passage in one of the translations showing the translator was uncomfortable with what he was reading, however he felt that was still the most accurate translation. 004.034 Sahih Bukhari One of these passages actually commands wife beating and the other possibly recommends some restraint but certainly doesn't forbid it. In fact it doesn't even forbid beating the wife as one beats a camel or a slave but just suggests it is better to have some restraint when beating the wife. How do you handle these things? Do you believe you are incompetent to remember an oral contract? Do you lack common sense? Do you believe the bulk of the residents of hell will be women? Do you believe God has given men the right to beat their wives?

"Well, I actually lived in an Islamic society for about 10 years. I do admit that there are some unislamic practises in such societies but I wouldn't relate that to Islam, I believe it's more to do with culture rather than religion.
For example you mentioned wife beating, which is a big issue in the Islamic world and it's often misunderstood by non-muslims as well as Muslims themselves! However, wife beating is not only a problem in Muslim societies, it also occurs in western countries where women's civil rights are said to be protected, even though in some occasions when the case is brought to court, the victim wife does not win the case! "
The difference between Islamic society and Western society regarding wife beating is few if any people actually justifiy wife beating. I am unaware of any texts in the Bible which support wife beating. I've never heard a minister claim God has justified it.
YUSUFALI: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).
PICKTHAL: Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.
SHAKIR: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great."
Volume 8, Book 73, Number 68:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Zam'a:
The Prophet forbade laughing at a person who passes wind, and said, "How does anyone of you beat his wife as he beats the stallion camel and then he may embrace (sleep with) her?" And Hisham said, "As he beats his slave"
