Well, I actually lived in an Islamic society for about 10 years. I do admit that there are some unislamic practises in such societies but I wouldn't relate that to Islam, I believe it's more to do with culture rather than religion.
For example you mentioned wife beating, which is a big issue in the Islamic world and it's often misunderstood by non-muslims as well as Muslims themselves! However, wife beating is not only a problem in Muslim societies, it also occurs in western countries where women's civil rights are said to be protected, even though in some occasions when the case is brought to court, the victim wife does not win the case!
