""Another way to interpret that passage is that Jesus was trying to lead the individual to accept who He, Jesus, actually is. Jesus is good and He is Divine.""
By saying the exact opposite??
Why not simply make such a claim if he was really God almighty.
He clearly said that God alone is good and if you are telling me that he wanted to convey the message that he is good by saying the exact opposite then this is absurd. At least he should have given a clue to support your interptretation but since this is not the case ,we can only take this literally.
I’m curious. As a Muslim, do you believe that Mohammad was good? Would you call him good?
Let's revisit this verse in the Young's Literal Translation:
Mark 10:17-18
17 And as he is going forth into the way, one having run and having kneeled to him, was questioning him, 'Good teacher, what may I do, that life age-during I may inherit?'
18 And Jesus said to him, 'Why me dost thou call good? no one [is] good except One — God;
YLT
1. A man ran up to Jesus and kneeled. He then called Jesus a “good teacher.”
2. Jesus didn’t rebuke him for calling Him good and didn’t tell him to stand up.
3. Jesus asked the man why he called Jesus good and reminded him that only God is good.
The Bible doesn’t explain why Jesus made the statement.
1. As you have suggested, it could mean that Jesus was unhappy because the man called Him “good.”
2. Another interpretation is that Jesus used the man’s acknowledgment that Jesus is good to bring him to the next level of understanding. As I have already pointed out, Jesus shares many qualities with God. Here the man acknowledge that Jesus shares God’s quality called “good,” and applied it to Jesus.
We know that the word “good,” by itself can apply to humans, and does not indicate that a person is God. Jesus Himself applies the same Greek word, “good,” to common people. For example, in one of His parables Jesus made the following statement, using the very same Greek word for “good.”
Matt 22:10
10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good : and the wedding was furnished with guests.
KJV
Because the word good can be applied to common people, the word itself doesn’t indicate that the man thought Jesus is God. Under normal circumstances, there is no reason for any person to be upset when someone else calls him “good.” For example, if someone we3re to call me “good,” I would not tell him that it is inappropriate to call me “good” because “only God is good.” Therefore, the first interpretation is weak.
The second interpretation is more meaningful. The man made an innocuous statement which Jesus used as a teaching point. When he called Jesus good, the man was using the term as a term of respect. However, when the word is applied to Jesus, it takes on additional meanings. Jesus is “good” in a different way than we are “good.” When we call Jesus, “good,” the word assumes a quality which belongs only to God. Therefore, when the man called Jesus “good,” the statement carried information about Jesus’ divine nature.
