"What we find here is a statement of faith. There is no rational reason to think that the teachings in the Koran are more pure than the Bible."
Indeed there is a very logical reason;if the Bible was really as pure as u mentionned there would be no need for the Quran. The Quran being the last revelation is hence more accurate.
"I don't know what would happen if people followed the Koran. The sad state of modern Islam either means that the Koran is defective, or else that modern Muslims don't do a good job demonstrating what the Koran is capable of accomplishing."
I wonder what u mean by that.Today there are 2 very different groups of muslims which diagree with one another. We cannot blame the Quran for the doings of people, can we?If muslims follow each and evry word in the Quran then the difference will become apparent.
"Who is to say that your prophet somehow produced something more pure than what the Jewish and Christian prophets produced?"
God Almighty.
If you have doubts about what We have sent down to Our servant, produce another surah equal to it, and call your witnesses, besides Allah, if you are telling the truth. If you do not do that –and you will not do it–then fear the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, made ready for the unbelievers.(Al-Baqarah 2: 23-24)
Say: "If both humanity and jinn banded together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could never produce anything like it, even if they backed each other up." (Al-Israa’ 17: 88)
"What about people who commit crimes against humanity in the name of Islam, are they doing the same thing that Mohammad accussed Christians and Jews in his day of doing?"
If we assume that their is a ressemblance but how does all this connect? You can't blame the prophet for what people are doing when on top of that it is in direct contradictions with his teachings.
"I believe that God's truth can be found in any of the major translations of the Bible. "
If other christians had the same view as yours then there would be no need for so much variation in the texts.
"When a manuscrpt has been copied hundreds or thousands of times, scribal errors are to be expected. Fortunately, the majority of these scribal errors are trivial."
I am not very sure about that but still we cannot acknowledge for sure the extent of such errors. When we know that a simple mistranslation, omission or deletion can alter the meaning of a verse,i think its quite a serious problem.U know of the story of the coma(,) which caused a war ,don t you?
"Many thousands of the variants which are found in the MSS of the NT were put there deliberately. They are not merely the result of error or of careless handling of the text. Many were created for theological or dogmatic reasons (even though they may not affect the substance of Christian dogma). It is because the books of the NT are religious books, sacred books, canonical books, that they were changed to conform to what the copyist believed to be the true reading.[George Arthur Buttrick (Ed.),The Interpreter's Dictionary Of The Bible, Volume 4, 1962 (1996 Print), Abingdon Press, Nashville, pp. 594-595 (Under Text, NT).]
"We know that Jesus honored the Jewish scriptures. Not once did He trash the Old Testament writings the way modern Muslims trash both the Old and the New Testaments."
What don t u follow it then?At least not a single christian i have met follow the laws in the old testament. The Old Testament also orders those who commit adultery to be burnt in fire, and those who decide to desert their religion and follow another religion must get stoned to death (Deuteronomy 13:6-9, and Deuteronomy 17:3-5). Also the Old Testament orders Gays and Lesbians to be burnt in fire. Are any of these laws respected today?NO they aren't.
"Incidentally, I'm sure you realize that a similar process occurred in early Islam. As I understand the story, there were originally a number of different versions of the Koran until an early ruler gathered the variants up and burned them. He then made a uniform version for all Muslims and sent it around his kingdom"
Since the QUran was also memorised apart from being documented on paper ,there was no way for it to be altered. With the Bible it is different because no one back then or even today has memorised it.
