I have found a great low-tech assistive technology item that is a small talking picture frame with ten seconds of recording time. The device comes in two colors, black and blue and can be found in or around the jewelry department at Walmart. The picture frame is called Classic Treasures and is like a little book that opens. On the left-hand side there is a slot for a picture and on the right-hand side there is the mic for recording and the play button. You can record up to ten seconds of speech with remarkably good quality. If you have a child who can't access the play button you can hot-glue a square foam piece on the left-hand side of the frame. Then, when the frame is closed ,the child can push the outside cover to play the message the same way as you would when using a Big Mac switch. These great devices only cost $2.40 ( the price on the package says $4.94 but they are on sale) I have used these talking frames to send messages to and from home and school; to remind kids what sequence of events they need to do when working on an assignment; to greet other students in the hallways when transitioning from room to room; and with regular articulation students - having them say a hard word they've successfully mastered and use the device to share the word with teachers and parents. The device has many uses and best of all it's cheap. Boardmaker pictures can be velcroed on the outside cover or put inside the frame or both as the frame is just the right size.
