Proabably a little late in getting to you but you might want to look into software called WordPower made by Mayer Johnson, it can be uploaded onto a laptop or a Mercury. The Dynavox systems devices have software called Gateway that is picture based and functions in a similar way. OR try a Dynawrite for a device that does text to speech and is portable (Dynavox Systems).
