Posted by kc kcw Walter Nicholas "Buck" Dietzen RADM USN (Ret) passed away October 22, unexpectedly, but peacefully, at home at the age of 82. Adm Dietzen, originally from Chattanooga, TN, had lived in La Jolla for many years with his wife of 61 years, Ann. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1945, and the Naval War College. He spent a distinguished career in the Submarine Service, serving aboard the USS Tirante (SS420) which won a Presidential Unit Citation on one of two war patrols made in the Pacific during World War II. Later in his career, he commanded submarines USS Cubera (SS347), USS Scamp (SSN588), and USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN624). After serving at the Pentagon as Deputy Director of Undersea Warfare, he served in Ankara, Turkey as Chief of Military Assistance Mission to Turkey. After retiring from active duty, Adm Dietzen worked in the nuclear power industry, and later taught at the Navy Boost Program, and for the San Diego Unified School District, where he enjoyed interacting with his students.
