Dear USS Scamp Shipmates,
It has been determined that there is strong desire to once again have a reunion. After the success of Reno 2003, many feel such an event would be well received. To that end, your reunion organizers polled the industry for reunion proposals, and after receiving expensive package prices from San Diego, Seattle/Bremerton and Charleston, we took a look at Fredericksburg/San Antonio, Texas. What really prompted us to check out TX was the presence of a memorial and museum of WWII Navy ships, named in honor of Adm. Chester A. Nimitz. Lew Ross learned on one of his business trips that the museum also welcomes later ships of the line, as there is a need to perpetuate themselves, and few WWII guys will soon be left to help with honoraria and the like. Lew saw USS Scamp, SS-277 already in place on the wall, and immediately was compelled to think why not SSN-588? He approached the museum folks and learned that, indeed, the 588 would be a welcome addition. This, combined with the economical prices for accommodations, convenient air travel, local color and atmosphere, including what is expected to be an awesome bluebonnet bloom this spring, decided us to poll the crews. We recognize that Reno was a short 14 months ago, but the response to the query, sent out by email to the Scamp E-group, was overwhelmingly in favor of the SA/Fredericksburg idea in May 05, as opposed to waiting for Kansas City and the USSVI convention in September.
So, please consider joining the effort, and making your presence felt in Texas! Tentative dates are now May 4th 8th, but are still being massaged. We will soon send out the per capita cost information to you, and will also be doing FUND RAISING to collect donations for the $2,500 needed to put up the Scamp plaque and have a ceremony in her honor.
Please contact Lew Ross (801.550.9004; lewross1@comcast.net) or Lou Minor (916.425.2149; lou@uss-scamp.com) to discuss things, make suggestions, offer your help, or just get on the list. Obviously, we could use early and often commitments and lots of hands to help! We will post information on the Scamp Bulletin Board/Reunion Page as it becomes available and as changes occur, so check there often. And please
spread the word! Respectfully, Lew and Lou
P.S: There are some 20 or so of the SS-277 guys around, and were inviting them too!
