It's been quite a while since I last visited the site, and I like the ease of navigating around the revamped site.
I took particular note of the photo of Scamp's sail, donated by Cap'n AJM Atkins, found in the Awards and Citations page.
Why? Because it was Cap'n Atkins (as far as I know) that originally asked that 'SCAMP' be painted on the ends of the sail planes. I got 'volunteered' to do the job, I suppose because the COB was aware of me having artistic pretensions.
This was all in early 1964. It took me a couple of tries to get it right because I accomplished the task whilst laying on my belly on top of the plane, thus I had to think 'upside-down and backwards' while laying out the name. I think I had either the 'S' or the 'C' backwards on the first attempt, bringing on a fair amount of pinging from my deck ape shipmates.
The battle E and the Marjorie Sterett award came later, after my departure in mid-June of '64 just before Scamper's 64 West Pac.
