Tyler found out getting a bunch of A transfers vs. B just by virtue of his charisma/rep just doesn't happen
the right coach has to be able to accept some significant frustrations, and not let it deter them
it's one reason I think Scholl might do well, he & Carey have proven they can get some decent talent. I'm sure many on here have their own opinion of his potential limitations though.
Palmer at UCLA is interesting, he might see Beach as his last job. He has a good idea of knowing the challenges, not sure leaving UCLA though he'd think is a better long-term thing
not saying a SDSU assisstant can't succeed, just knowing what SDSU can do and knowing how to tap Long Beach are completely different things. total different frame of reference
it's exciting, and yeah, next couple years could be frustrating. will be interesting to see who the finalists are. If the thought is to try to make Beach SDSU, then that'sthe wrong thought in the first place. Monson had the inane thought of just schedule tough to become like Gonazga, lol.
Oh if only Harrington had stayed, lol,.
A lot of the oldtimers (myself included) still think were close to the level of SDSU, but honestly they are closer to Gonzaga than we are to them. Just like Wayne Morgan had a problem adjusting to "mid-major" program, a SDSU assistant may have the same issue.
a couple of those, trainer & medicine, we do have staff, so it's not that big a disparity
you basically have 10 players, and 3 assistant coaches to develop them. I get SDSU's couple extra assistants make it particularly easier for time demands to help with recruiting
still 3 assistants, should be fine to develop players, not like one needs to baby-it every frggn player, oh wait maybe they expect baby sitting now, lol
the NCAA decided to allow more overkill for staffing
different world now
Check out the SDSU coaching staff. They have 10 including the head coach and one graduate assistant, while LBSU has 5. The NCAA has limits on the number of staff who can recruit, but there has to be a big advantage in developing players when you have so many assistants.

The person's qualities are important of course, but so is the school. Fully funded schollys, NIL, money for quality assistants... you can go on and there are many more. One thing for sure, we need a homerun hire, someone who can win big despite all of the disadvantages. If he only stays 2 or 3 years, so be it. At least the perception of the program changed to positive from negative.
Justin Hustin
went from SDSU assistant to Fresno State,
lasted 6 years, 0.500 record, two winning seasons
let goal after the Mountain West tourney
just no simple formula for selecting a head coach
tough business
