do you really think the same result if there was no announcement? the pyschology would be drastically different. of course we'll never know, but puuuuhleeze with the idea this guy hadn't eroded the program and interest.
1) for those of you out there on and on about his grad rates. aside from Northridge, there aren't schools in MBB in the Big West that have had problems. give it a rest.
2) the regular season was among, and I think the worst, coaching job of his 17 years. picked 2nd, tons of returnees, and just stunk up 75% of the season, most of November stunk, January was bad, last two weeks of Feb bad. this wasn't a rebuild
get over the recency bias, sheesh, same thing we won 5 straight and the nuckleheads were thinking that was 'oh lord, he's now a great coach' stuff. then lost 5 straight when had a chance for a 2nd seed.
3) now we'll be bombarded with tons of more MOnson sympathy stories, the guy has milked one or two weeks in his career 3 times (Gonazaga, then 2012, ...and now) like no other coach in the history of coaches, cause.... we got it he's well liked and chummy out on the golf course.
good for him, I appreciated his focus on his players afer UCR & UCI, but DID NOT tonight with the quipping 'I'm not done yet' which like he's parlayed in his career, focusing on himself at the opportune time for his wrong moment. Keep it on the players and Long Beach, not yourself dude! the nicey-nice good story media will of course ignore he's a sub 0.500 vs. D1, the losingest coach in Beach history, the horrid drop in attendance, the non-factor in plugging the University. that's ok, they have a story to sell.
4) Smitheran deserves credit for this run, as much as Monson, timing was PERFECT in the end.
players/coaches freed up to let loose and played like it. I mean all year Tsohonis was 27% from 3s, then caught fire vs. UCR with great shot selection, and carried it over. from 27% to 50% 3s? lol, gie Smitheran some credit there. and Tsohonis especially in the Riverside game to get a rhythm finally.
anyway Go Beach, they've got athletes to have a fighters chance, with some rest, and all world freak AT. hopefully Monson keeps his comments solely on the players all next week, and no more Monson scheming (remember SMU).
Go Beach, beat a 1 or 2 seed.
