Cal Poly. $250-$300 k base pay.
1-39 in reg season last two years. Gym limited to 3000 max. Academic challenges, but also highly regarded academics are a draw. Can be perceived as a non-diverse campus. No D1 successful history, but outdraws Full, Riverside, North even with a lousy product. Captive but low populations
Beach. $250-300k base pay
Always high potential, stepping stone history
Pepperdine. $400k base pay due to private & WCC. ever since Harrick left, struggled. Great location. basically lousy gym. Biggest draw is getting to play GOnzaga, that's really not a draw.
UOP. $400k base pay due to private & WCC. haven't moved on from Thomason well. Captive somewhat in Stockton. Stockton in teh running for worst city in California or maybe US.
Fresno State. $600k+ or more. MOuntain West is a highly regarded MBB conference. Maybe 6 teams in NCAAs this year. Some great history with Grant & Tark, but not much traction since Tark. Draws 3k, and could draw 10k in an instant if they turned around and won, like Grant did. Captive 1.5 million to 2 million population area, local business support far greater than other jobs. not great rep as a place to go.
there's gonna be lots of competition for basically the same desired coach & qualities in these gigs.
Again, Juco, D2, D1 past, D1 assistant. there's no formula for this hire.
Need a TEACHER and COMMUNICATOR. & assessing the TEACHING component is going to be the biggest challenge, to not get swayed by candidates saying what they think they need to say about TEACHING.
Actual TEACHING requires assessing if these candidates can actually teach or have just been around basketball all their lives and give information out. There's a difference. We've got lucky. Tyler, Amy, Knipe, Jenny, Van Slyke, Campbell. all of these dudes can flat out TEACH, and more importantly, they know how to TEACH, and understand TEACHING. Monson could not translate whatever he wanted or thought he wanted into repetitive behaviours, he simply couldn't do that, meaning he DID NOT TEACH well, and apparently couldn't even figure out how to learn to teach well, which was really bad, and even worse that Cegles & Fee failed to assess his lack of teaching skills, among other things.
Here's a non-candidate but a guy that's had success and a likely TEACHER, if the guy was even 5-6 years younger he'd be a guy to consider if interested. He's not gonna be a candidate, just that a proven track record at multiple longer stints, including in Calif.

A 50-55 year old may not be a bad thing, if they meet the TEACHING and COMMUNICATING background. 'Hot' assistants, well there's a million of those guys, but can they TEACH, and even inclined to build something over 6-7 years?
I'm not sold on some 'hot' assistant approach.
tough hire. to me would be ideal to get a good teacher, who could also retain our assistants and their recruiting connections. The issue with our last 12 years was was first and foremost the guy running the show was a disinterested and poor communicator and limtied teaching ability that repeatedly got in the way of success.
