what timing
https://usctrojans.com/news/2024/2/5/usc-womens-volleyball-adds-transfer-ally-batenhorst-to-2024-roster.aspx
Nothing announced, would expect if it is would be shortly given the smoke about it. However, would not be a surprise
Per VT, it would be a move to USC as an assistant. So no uprooting, etc.
Why?
Speculation is the Beach job is a huge undertaking especially time wise demands as he's chief cook and bottlewasher, selling tickets, etc.; , without the $ resources a major program has for more support in Marketing, recruiting budget, etc.
National Team aspirations. As an assistant, potentially more flexibility or ability to serve as a NT assistant as well.
I'm not sure the above can't be accomplished at Beach, but I'm sure it would have required more support ($$) from Beach to offload work and add incentives to assistants. Would like to believe this could have been worked out, but if no money avail means no money avail, well...... We don't know all the things Fee promised, that were not contractual.
This is the 3rd year Tyler has gone after Xfers. While he has made found some very good nuggets of player talent and developed some, he really has not got that 'big arm' 1st/2nd team All American type that would elevate Beach closer to top 20 type capability and not be strictly beholding to out developing Major programs to make up the gap. Maybe not getting that type of transfer for a 3rd straight year is a bit difficult to deal with and mounting frustration, with little NIL available. Just a guess.
So let's say Tyler is making $240k (which is VERY high and solid nationally to mid-major and low P5 peers):
If USC offers like $250 to $300k, while REDUCING duties, allowing more flexibility for NT work, then it's understandable (even if we don't like it) the logic of a move. It seems odd for him of course to go from total control HC to being an Assistant to another young HC, still it's not like his reputation will suffer and he'll still be able to pursue other jobs.
Just get the impression he would like to stay SoCal. the UCLA and USC HC jobs won't open up. But financial prospects at USC combined with National Team being in Anaheim.
it would suck big-time no question. Tyler is a highly visible respected coach nationally. Maybe there is more behind.
Natalie Morgan and Bjarn Huus are very young, they appear very well regarded by the team and engaged, just their resumes have little experience. Not a bad thing if they are sponges of what they've learned, and teach effectively. As stated Huus was taking charge a lot last year. That implies a lot of trust.
Still, they'd have their work cut out to keep the team together and learning on the job. PLus MOrgan I think would like/need to get a setter assistant, with Tyler gone. Finding that right coach could be tough. Would like to think both could keep injecting promise and competence into the program keeping what Tyler did going,fast/international style of ball; just a lot to ask. Would be fantastic if they could keep this group together to prove it's a system, and not the architect.
again, all speculation at this point. some of the references made about it seem to make sense, but you never know.
There's still another xfer period in May as well. Morgan and Huus would have to be incredible salespersons and instill a lot of confidence and promise to keep this great team together to pull off continuing what Tyler has started. Two 30 year old coaches, but they know the game, just not near the same coaching experience. I think even Tyler would be supportive of that, but then he won't be there to reinforce if he leaves.
Does anyone know for sure that he is leaving???? Is this all speculation? Does he want to move his family again and start over after a short stay? What is the truth?
