It could be a current or former Head Coach.....at D1, at D2, at a Juco
It could a young (like 35 years ish) coach
It could be an 'older' coach (like 55 ish)
it does not have to fit some narrative
1) The guy has to be able to demonstrate they know how to teach. That can be hard to assess probably for some of those that will evaluate. but this is almost #1. We need a knowledgable teacher, who understands and will also learn and continually progress.
we've seen what happens with 0 growth and same ol same ol type of formulatic coaching does.
2) He has to COMMUNICATE well. that means one on one, with recruits, with boosters, with the community, with alumni. that's half the damn job.
listen to our coach speak. what does he do to market the program
that's it.
Teach Basketball
Communicate to stakeholders, yes recruiting communication is pretty important
find that guy or girl and you'll have a good coach and success. now finding that person is the tough part.
a) Juco Example: Boyd Grant came from an Idaho Juco, and was solid
b) assistants. sounds easy, but sorting out who fits 1) & 2) above is not easy. A lot of so called good assistants won't necessarily be good teachers. Especially with a search committee or if goals to be PC no matter what are involved. And you can hire a solid coach, that passes the PC filter.
who knows who it will be. Hopefully it's clear what the AD seeks and gets.
all you have to do is listen to Tyler and Alan, and understand they meet 1) and 2) above.
