love this quote:
“We said they’re going to have to beat us from 3’s and we’re going to get in the zone, know where they’re shooters are and make them play outside in.,” Monson said. “We had it packed in, and just rebound when they miss them. They’ve got to make them all game to beat us, and they almost did. Our defense and rebounding won that game.”
so if I understand correctly, our plan is to hope teams miss wide open 3 pt shots, lol. I'm just beside myself, seriously. How's that worked out so far in conference?!!
an interesting presser
yep, the team still has a higher ceiling, here we are in February far away from a ceiling.
as to Monson's comments on the defense and 3 pt shot, confounding. maybe he watched a different game. SD shot 41%, our poor 3 pt defense issues continued, Beach won because Beach shot 50% from 3s to mitigate, and boarded 2nd half, so the shot selection and hitting 3 pts was the huge key, along with low 2nd chances for SD, but until this team changes defense approach and guards players vs space more, the games where we get torched and lose will happen again. not sure how to reach a ceiling - when the coach accepts crappy guarding of 3s, and frankly some crappy defense spacing, there's huge gaps in the 1-3-1 zone. not very convincing, this guarding of space vs. opponents will continued to be a problem, dodged a bullet last night.
as to the ceiling. for starts finally Silva is in the role he should have been all along, a 10-15 minute PT spot up shooter role. still slow, but he has a role, and nice he nailed his shots.
and then there's Messiah, it's the other biggest ceiling for this team, along with guys getting guarding more closely. He played ok, he took open shots, didn't hit them. 2 assists, 0 turnovers. the guy can pass. just Monson is gonna have to find a way to get him comfortable, I like him starting. he is small, and he is qdecently uick. so long as he doesn't force shots he'll be ok, and be a defensive on ball pest.
they'll beat Cal Poly next week to go 7-5, and then the usual question they have not been able to answer is winning multiple games in a row.
nice win, still, we get into modes with Tsohonis on the brink to force shots, stagnant, and then especially defense, not really putting pressure on and detering ball handlers.
Davis with Pepper and Johnson & Milling will be a big test, they have 3 scorers who based on our D will torch us the way we guard space and not 3s, and then the other guys play super physical defense. Have to not let those guys penetrate and stick to them and then be very physical with their other guys. I cringe at the thought of our open space zone with those 3 perimeter guys
