if Beach wins, a nice last win to Monson's career, beating a 1st place team, maybe leaving a thread of 'what if' lol. a last time in a press conference for him to be upbeat
and if Beach loses, let's face it, the last two weeks have been as dreadful two weeks as his entire enture, only a 2nd half gasp vs. a gassed Riverside (10th place) team, has had any modicum of decency.
either way. give Scholl 9 games to demonstrate something.
no reason to postpone a search, and doesn't preclude to even give Scholl a full year interim option if he can proves himself as a motivator and some simple adjustments.
there's an entire week until playing dreadful Poly next Saturday to re-group.
the downside?
uh, none. I guess if the AD doesn't want to appear 'mean' lol. like really it would appear to be 'rushing things' lol. or it would reflect negatively on LBSU? seriously?
to me, the upside is having a chance to put a jolt of energy into the program, and some semblance of a chance to maybe retain the core
could it just devolve into more losses? sure. but so what even if that happened. oh my, how could Beach do that to it's winningest (errr, losingist) coach?!
the change is going to be made, there's no chance in hell the AD is retaining this guy, not after the Irvine debacle.
If you are going to make a change, why in hades wait any longer. because it's not nice, lol?
Fee did it with Joy, and it turned out to be a great decision for the a) players, b) program, c) future coach selection
there's never an optimum time, but basically the last time, with some semblance of a plan for this year is to start Monday with a plan, and not a plan to tread water more.
Messiah/Hart, Jones, Tsohonis, AJ, AT
fast, quick, spread the floor, don't clog up the lane, can press, active, can switch man to man
yes, a bit vulnerable inside, so what, remember 2022?
just confounding IMO, my bet is this line-up has played all of about 10 minutes if that all year.
should be out there situationally 3 or 4 minutes each half.
breaking 'myths' again
1) we don't have good 3 pt shooters. WRONG. !!! Tsohonis, Silva, Thompson, Jones AJ last year. all high 37/38% ish shooters before coming to long beach or in case of Jones/AJ last year. . until this year a 3 pt shooting train wreck.!
we don't shoot the 3 well, because we don't get enough open looks, and guys would take some horrid ones especially earlier in the season
can guarantee Lewis lights it up in practice, he's rushed in games.
2) We don't have a proven pt guard. WRONG AGAIN! Thompson may not be Caspar, but the guys was a 5 assist, 2:1 TO ratio, 40% shooting proven pt guard before coming to thd Beach
get this, he's started...... 3 games!!! lol. one of those he lit up SB. some coaching decision there! notice vs. Bakersfield all his drives were mostly left side with no space in the middle left for him.
3) Monson simply has not been able to teach and adapt this team for it's talents. He's uber mind-set of pound inside has left LT a shell of a player. Yeah, we need some inside plays for him, but the flow is to try to cram it inside with teh lane clogged, or pinch post AT or Tsohonis with the lane already clogged. Our entire offense is predictated on clogging the lane, no wonder all year Messiah has been a footnote, lol no wonder LT has struggled. Beach swings teh ball around to, get this, post up up LT, after failing to post up LT. jeez. no wonder we don't get open 3s, LT's not the greatest passer, and he's the first option.
one of the biggest head-scratchers of this year was Monson's inability to recognize what the offense needed to be for Thompson, and the limitations of Silva. it's not a recruiting failure for both. It's an abject failure to recognize what to do with who you recruited, and inability to maximize what they can do. they've struggled like crazy, and both were proven 3 pt % shooters! nuts
defense. yikes. this love affair with 'playing uptempo' is just more Monson formula speak. play and develop solid defense first, then uptempo can come. instead, it contributed to 3 pt jack-ups on offense. from game one, Monson never developed decent man defense. Guys simply give too much space on their off ball guys, and we don't rotate either after trapping man or zone. all year. and that's with a team with length that is now routinely being faked into the proverbial popcorn popper as the run out to the arc.
it's been just a terrible coaching/teaching job this year, horrific, especicially with all the experience and returnees.
nothing to do with recruiting. Monson has totally screwed this year up with his fixation and fixated decisions (#1 was the continued forcing of Silva as a 25 minute guy starting), and he doesn't know how to fix it, is pretty obvious.
