2) it took a guy playing about 2-3 minutes a game, Hart, to show up and lead by example. who knows what would have happened, without his play that 7 or 8 straight plays, where he was dishing balls for EASY buckets, and hounding Riverside. great for Hart, but seriously a veteran team can't muster a response on their own?
3) 1-1 was not a good week, 5 weeks into conference, and it's a bunch of blah, with no wins vs. conference teams with winning records. and these are not great teams. sure Davis and UCSD are better than in non-conference, but that doesn't make them even really good by D1 standards, the expectations was for Beach to push close to a top 100 team. Irvine is the only really top 100, D1 team. Riverside by D1 standards, isn't good. and has been proven out neither is Beach. Fullerton isn't good, Poly is terrible, Hawaii is so so. we haven't beat anybody but USC and MIchigan this year. two nice wins, that's it, lol. 4-5 poor losses. yikes
4) 10 minutes of grit and smarts doesn't make up for 60-70 minutes of more disfunction for a week, it's really bad over all. Especially guys unable to move the ball and undisciplined.
5) today was not all great defense, couldn't cover the 3 from the corner once again
6) our coach is a failure for this year, given this team and talent coming in, and it's all been exposed in the shortcomings in conference week after week. to be 5 weeks in, and needing basically to reel off 9 or 10 straight now, is simply unacceptable. that's where this season is at, basically.
his use of the 1-3-1 this year has been really bad. I really don't think Monson understands the 3 pt shot, and trends in the game. sure we can use it to disrupt for a couple possession, but staying in it? nah, coaches know more the most part how to exploit it, for us, it's repeated wide open corner 3s, when they get teh ball in teh middle and then a couple swing passes. sure, use it to change up for a couple possessions, but by and large we get exploited a lot, and especially in conference this year.
Monson spent the first 15-16 games trying to force a 'vision' with Silva as a starting point, despite all prior tape on the guy, all stats, all the play of the first 7-8 games showing he's not D1 speed or strength. tough thing to say, love that he's a Beach player, but coaches have to know and see what we can see. unless in practice they simply don't practice at full speed, which god forbid Monson doesn't have full speed assessments. Silva off ball is always grabbing guys. instead of developing him as a spot shooter and a 10 minute full effort guy, he indulged that situation, and here we are almost February and no consistent offense flow. stubborness is the only plausible explaination.
Monson's stubborness. his insistence of 'going inside, cause that's 'our game'" mantra;, his formula type decisions, not pressing until 4 minutes left, staying in defenses way too long, not developing effective man to man, thinking a fast paced team that can't seem to get open 3s as well as less fast paced teams. as a result the team has trouble moving teh ball and continues to space poorly 3 months in.
always good to get a win, and who knows, but it's another season reduced to hope vs. being grounded in Knipe type development.
