Versatility is not a handicap but an asset. There are so few 5's in college ball that getting one is highly unusual. LB just needs a player that can defend the post and play a little with his back to the basket.

: The 1-5 designation seems like more of an NBA
: thing. Most college teams have a point
: guard, two wing players, and two post
: players. True, we have a potential logjam
: but it's as much about if guys have the
: skills to match up with smaller guys as it
: is about if they can bang inside. We just
: need someone to help TJ and Eugene as little
: inside.

: And the same discussion will be taking place
: next year at this time with Jules
: Montgomery.
:
: Larry Anderson, Shelton Boykin, Lin Chang
: and Jules Montgomery are all 3's. This is
: the one downside when people say "sign
: the best player available." A logjam
: can occur causing people to be played out of
: their natural position, which is what is
: going to happen.

: Not a surprise to me. I always said he was
: more of a 3 than a 5. Bill, I think you
: we're the only one that agreed. It was
: either you or zsparky from the BW boards.

: Burlison is far from being an idiot. He is
: one
: of the knowledgable sportswriters around.
:
: The jury is still out on Chang. But he's not
: going to be the tough Center we were hoping
: he would be. He will probabily spend more
: time as a back up at the 3 than at the 5.
:
: LBSU is a year away from being competitve
: nationally. But thats being competitive
: against top 40 type Teams, not BW Teams.
: LBSU is still the favorite, along with UCSB
: to win the BW.
:
: LBSU's probable starting 5 of Ware, Giling
: or Plater, Anderson, Phelps, and Robinson is
: at the least as good or better than any
: other BW Team. And, at least for a BW Team
: we have good depth.

: I agree with you LBRob, you may disagree
: with
: Burlison but he's no idiot that's for sure.
: Larry Reynolds... now THERE was an idiot...
:
: To further his Chang comment, he said that
: two things are working against any sort of
: immediate impact:
:
: 1. A JUCO transfer
: 2. Sat out a year (he didn't play last
: season)
:
: From the practices he's seen, the transition
: period in terms of learning the offensive
: sets and the defensive rotations is taking a
: longer than usual time. He suspects that
: this is partly because the game is much
: faster than what Chang is used to and the
: players are bigger. This is with BW
: competition, think about when we play the
: TOUGH part of the schedule. The speed and
: size of those teams will simply be too much,
: too soon for Chang. As a whole he wasn't
: bagging on him, just laying out a somewhat
: logical argument against any sort of 20/10
: impact out of the shoot player.
:
: Burlison also commented that the feeling is
: that our overall record this year could be
: almost the same as last year due to the
: difficulty of the non-conf schedule...
: 15-15? Frank still feels we're a year away
: at least
:
:

: I agree with what you are saying about
: Chang,
: but not about Burlison. He's no idiot. He
: knows a ton about basketball. Frank has
: done a lot for 49er sports in the local
: media and I thank him for his efforts.
:
: Chang seems to have some good abilities from
: the little I've seen of him. But he's not
: going to be an inside force. By size alone
: he'll snag rebounds but not as an inside
: warrior. His game is dribble penetration,
: outside shooting, and passing. What I hope
: he can also do is set screens for Plater and
: Gilling, defend the oppositions tall lanky
: guys, and learn the Monson system fast.
:
: --Previous Message--
: I believe Lin Chang will be very effective
: for
: us this year if Coach Monson uses him in the
: right way. Lin is the typical Euro who has
: a nice mid-range jumpshot and could take
: defenders off the dribble to the hole. We
: need to use Lin like the lakers use Paul
: Gasol. His jumpshots should be coming from
: the "pinch" post. Also let him
: take defenders off the dribble trying to
: draw fouls. I really like this kid. I
: disagree with what Burlison is saying.
: Burlison is a idiot who doesn't know
: anything about basketball. Why is he
: covering LB Basketball?
