Last Friday before the Los Al vs. Edison HS Football game I noticed Frank Burlison on the sidelines observing the action. I immediately went over and complimented him on his blog and of course started to ask him his opinions of Beach basketball for this season. Below is what he told me (paraphrased of course)
The Good
1. Eugene Phelps is the real deal. He has improved 1000% and is so much better than last season its crazy. His speed, size, and shooting ability will be a great asset
2. Greg Plater has improved so much he wouldn't be surprised to see him in starters role. His scoring is that good.
3. Richardson is the real deal as well... big wide body, great hands... will contribute this year a little, watch out for next season...
4. Woodard and Gilling.. he didn't talk about much except to say that they are role players with some pretty severe limitations in terms of speed, shot creativity, etc. Nice back up's, but that's about all.
The Bad
1. The schedule is ridiculasly difficult. The press and other coaches came away scratching their head with this line-up. No high major would EVER attempt something like this because there would simply be the risk for too many losses. The fact that we are playing these schools reaks of old D1 "body bag" football games to simply secure funds to help the program.
2. The schedule pt. 2. The other fear with the schedule is that the team will suffer a few too many 30+ pt beat downs and will lose confidence in themselves or even worse suffer a season ending injury... A conference opener AT UCR (a tough place and team to play in it's own right) is no cake walk either.
3. All indications are that Montegomery will RS. He's 190 and a thin 190... it will hard for him to get up to 210... a prospect, but pretty rough.
The Ugly
1. Don't expect anything from Chang this season. He's soft as a cotton ball and is super confused on the court. Frank said he's the 1980's soft euro player right now and will only be good for maybe 10 mins per game. A BIG project
2. If Fleming at 250lbs didn't work, why are we now impressed with 290lbs? This guy is very nice, but his footwork is still so slow he just can't be effective. Again a big body that will provide virtually nothing.
3. No shock here but don't expect Wilson this season, he didn't know where the rumors were that he could come back, because from what he's been told and seen.. "aint no way" that's happening
Lastly, just an observation but he didn't mention Casper, TJ, Laz or any other player as either being worse, better or average. I don't know if I just forgot to ask or what, but they didn't make a huge new impression on him during my 15 min talk.
